This week’s ‘Dollhouse’ would make Solid Snake proud

Longtime viewers of Joss Whedon’sDollhouse— both of us — may have noticed thatthis week’s episodeshared a pretty prominent plot element with everyone’s favorite postmodern stealth series. Without getting into specifics, The Bad Guys inDollhousecreate an army made up of soldiers with genetically linked minds, who can wordlessly synchronize their actions and read each other’s minds. Sound familiar? Of course, Eliza Dushku defeats the psychic soldiers roughly eleven hours quicker than it took David Hayter to do the same thing, but you get the general idea....

THQ sends me tickets to ride Metro 2033

This weekend, I received a nondescript envelope in the mail. Inside the brown envelope I found a letter confirming my trip to ride the Moscow Metro, along with two tickets. I immediately made the connection toTHQ’sMetro 2033, the recently-announced first-person shooter based on a Russian novel. I was right, of course — the Russian on the ticket (and in the letter) was identical to some of the text used in the promos for the game (particularly the “Fear the Future” text, shown in the big black letters above)....

USA Today keeps it simple and declares the Wii a winner

In true USA Today underreporting form, the colorful everyman’s paper says that because of Internet chatter and common sense launch stats, the Wii is the winner and will get the cookie. Lacking any true facts of substance, the USA Today’salarmist headlinecould sway those on the fence of ignorance to pick up the Nintendo Wii. Truck stop diner crowds cheer in unison: David Nieves, 26, of Philadelphia gives the Wii an A-....

Weekend Charity: Babycastles promoting indie gaming

Cutting it a bit close for having this officially on the weekend I realize, but sometimes a good reason to donate some money doesn’t come along until Sunday. This weekend’s charity is theKickstarter for Babycastles’s Manhattan exhibitionof independent gaming. I can’t really say it better than they do to explain the reasons for the exhibition: “At a Manhattan location, we’re aiming to strongly influence the public perception of video games and the culture surrounding this art form....

Weekend Reading: Videogames and the auteur theory

A large portion of the videogames as art debate focuses on games telling serious stories, having deep meaning, and being fairly unique. Yet, there’s another issue within the games as art debate that I want to focus on: the auteur. Behind every successful game, there is a large team that goes into making it. From the writers to the programmers to the think tank of designers who come up with all the various facets of gameplay....

What NMH 2: Desperate Struggle really means, part 2

Yesterday I beganpicking apartNo More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggleto see what meaning I could derive from the game. For me the entire series speaks volumes about the world of gaming and analyzing it is a great way to get conversations going about gaming in general. It’s also a good way to have people tell me I’m over-analyzing stuff. But I like doing that, and I think that art needs to be discussed and analyzed and that we should share our differing opinions on what games mean to us....

Whatever happened to Xbox 360 faceplates?

It “turned out nobody bought it,” says Microsoft marketing directorAlbert Penelloin an interview withOXM. “We don’t ever create an accessory with the intent of having it fail. The idea wasn’t bad … people used to put faceplates on their cell phones. Rewind five years, faceplates were what everybody wanted to do.” Without sales, naturally they “killed that one pretty quickly,” Penello continues. While I don’t sport a custom faceplate these days, allowing users to easily customize their electronics is a concept I will happily get behind....

White Knight Chronicles funny: The danger of photography

I played and somewhat enjoyedWhite Knight Chronicles(review coming tomorrow) on the PS3. One of my favorite little features of the game was the Crystal Camera, a snapshot tool that I used like a phone cam in-game. I probably spent a bit too much time with that, as you’ll see soon. I really like thisWhite Knight Chroniclescommercial that highlights both online play and the dangers of obsessing over the perfect shot with the camera....
