ESWC ’07: Accessories are cool, useless

Aside from the scores of milling gamers and journalists trying to get a glimpse of whatever it was all thoseCounter-Strikepeople are cheering about, there are booths and displays spread all around the periphery of Hall 5 at the Parc des Expositions in Paris, France. In some of these booths are games, some new, some already released. In others, there are fancy accessories that, obstensibly, enhance said games. SteelSeriesandLogitechwere there, peddling theirmousepadsand speakers, respectively....

Fail sense is tingling: Take-Two talks about subscriptions for ‘triple A titles’

The warning lights are blinking, and that can mean only one thing — another publisher is saying some very worrying things about how the digital age can help them nickel n’ dime consumers. Take-Two isdoing the honors, suggesting that its “triple A titles” could go the way of the MMO. After chatting bollocks about how great downloadable content is at the BMO Capital Market’s conference, T2 CEO Strauss Zelnick moved onto what he called the “Holy Grail” — the MMO model that publishers have pathetically tried to grasp at without realizing that they’ll never make as much money off it as Blizzard....

Fake game Friday: Destructoid Fanboy Hunter

This week’s fake game is a combination of a fewtehuberonePhotoshops and a shortSyKo-KlOwNproposition. It’s calledDestructoid Fanboy Hunter, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. Hit the jump for the full lowdown on the most hypothetically hardcore game ever made. According to tehuberone, he summarizes the game as follows: “An army of Destructoids terrorize the world in a mission to rid the universe of fanboys.” SyKo-KlOwN had a similar idea a few weeks earlier, proposing,...

Far Cry 2 sells a million in three weeks, proceeds not going to malaria research

Today, Ubisoft announcedFar Cry 2has sold one million units in a mere three weeks since hitting retailers worldwide. This marks a monumental achievement and it deserves to be celebrated with candy, cake, confetti, and prostitutes. I wasn’t able to ask Ubisoft Montreal (the game’s developer) about a party or prostitutes, but it doesn’t stop me from saying it needs to happen. In terms ofFar Cry 2deserving the landmark sales, I believe it does....

Free App of the Day: Oddy Smog’s Misadventure

Sorry, what? You think I don’t have a good App for you today? Well you can spunk off with that attitude, son! Today I’ve dug deep to findOddy Smog’s Misadventure, a rather brilliant little title that you’d be stupid to pass up. You play the titular smogball who is attempting to escape a machine and make his bid for freedom. You press the right side of the screen to make Oddy grab spinning cogs, and let go at the right moment to propel him higher....

Friday Night Fights: What would Destructoid be without FNF edition

Power-glove may have beaten meto the punch, but I’ve been running out of themes for these Friday Night Fights posts, so I ran with it anyway. If you haven’t got the slightest idea what I’mreferring to, then you obviously don’t hit up the community blogs as often as you should. In any case, FNF will be starting up at around 10:00 p.m. EST unless otherwise noted. I hope you guys are ready for moreGrand Theft Auto IVinsanity, cause we’ll be dishing it out by the spoonful....

Game peripherals everywhere: 30% more than last year

It used to be easy to hide the evidence that you are a gamer. You could just stash the controllers and throw your PS2 into the bedroom. That’s not the case anymore. Gaming peripherals have now invaded our living rooms and bedrooms. Space-hogging drum controllers, guitars, Wii Remotes, dance pads, chargers, and other controllers are all the rage these days, and the most recent NPD data says that 2008 is on track to set a new record....

GDC 08: Steven Spielberg’s Boom Blox (also, hands-on!)

Schindler’s List.Saving Private Ryan.Jaws.Boom Blox.Yeah, when I first heard about Steven Spielberg’s upcoming EA game for the Wii I didn’t think it fit in with his accomplished line of work either. But, I guess most of the GDC attendees were just as curious (and hopelessly optimistic) as I was, as the line for theBoom Bloxseminar was the longest one I had seen all week. I also think the rumors circulating about Spielberg making an appearance also had something to do with it (sadly, he did not show up, what with a little movie calledIndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skullon his plate)....

GDC 09: check out the GameTrak Freedom, the 360 Wiimote

One look at the remote above, and I have to admit I feel my heart sinking a little. I like my 360 exactly how it is — it doesn’t need motion control. Well, that’s only the way I feel: enthusiasts of the Wii’s control scheme may be wishing their 360 had a remote to work with. Thanks toPerformance Designed Products, this remote will be compatible with the Xbox 360 later this fall, and a PS3 version may be coming in the future as well....

GDC 10: Building a blockbuster franchise

It is the dream of every game designer. You know, not only creating a game, but to create a game franchise. LikeMario, Halo, Final Fantasy, these are games that not only stand as one amazing experience, but a plurality of games that revolutionize how we are entertained. For every ten or twenty garbage title, there is one amazing experience that will be coming back with sequels and more. It is a very difficult thing to create....
