Yahoo, viaNext Gen, is reporting on some choice yet depressing words from Nintendo Prez Satoru Iwata revealing the company’s current and near-future plans for their Wii console. Of very little interest to any of you — we aren’t huge in China — is Nintendo’s plans to launch the Wii in the Communist state in 2008. Iwata has stressed the company’s intent to produce games specifically catering to that region, so expect motion controlled Tibetan oppression minigames and the addition of one billion Miis....
Nintendo has announced that a new Wii bundle is coming May 15th with an MSRP of $149.99, confirmingrumors from yesterday. The Wii will be available in white or black and comes packaged withMario Kart Wiiand a matching steering wheel accessory, in addition to the console and a remote. This also means that there will now be a black Wii steering wheel accessory available separately, which will retail for $9.99. Similarly confirmed is the new “Nintendo Selects” line, which will includeZelda: Twilight Princess,Animal Crossing: City Folk,Mario Super Sluggersand the formerly-bundledWii Sportsfor $19....

One of my favorite Xbox Live Indie Games of the past months has been the irreverent and charmingCthulhu Saves the World. Now, Robert Boyd of Zeboyd Games has announced work on an “enhanced version” of the game for PC and 360 with features that had to be cut from the original release. to fund the development of this version (and improve their game engine for use with PC), Zeboyd started a Kickstarter project with a goal of $3000....
Arcen Games has another video out of their survival/exploration titleA Valley Without Wind. This video comes with developer commentary which helps explain what players will be doing, and shows off quite a bit more of the world. It looks pretty interesting, though I’m not sure how much I will want to play it when it comes out. I am certainly willing to give it a try, but I don’t know if it is really the type of game I will enjoy....
Yesterday,Guitar Hero 5was “confirmed” by Activision, along with a whole host of other “Hero” titles. We say “confirmed” in quotes because this is Activision, and the day it doesn’t develop a GH game is the day the world itself stops turning. Of course, Activision doesn’t need to stop making the games, because it is making a ridiculous amount of cash off the back of the series. The evil publisher proudly boasted that the franchise hasmade over $2 billion, allowing Activision to grow fat and bloated on its milky produce....

I’ve got a theory about gamers. Just like with Erikson’s eight stages of psychological development, I think all gamers go through stages of assessing why they play games. When you first start gaming, learning about various genres and engaging in a little escapism might be enough. When we get older, it seems that gamers need to find a way to make gaming about more than just having fun, or else they end up either dropping the hobby, or worse, hating themselves for still loving it....
