Film critic Mark Kermode wrote avery interesting articlerecently comparing the recent scares and controversies surrounding videogames to the similar scares and controversies that surrounded horror movies back in the 1980s. TheGuardian, by way of reactionary columnist Jaqueline Hunt, hasresponded to the article, missing the point entirely and bringing up the long-deadRapeLaycontroversy. In her article, “These videogames aren’t art, they’re extreme pornography,” Hunt focuses entirely on one game,RapeLay, to make her point, totally ignoring the existence of truly artistic games and choosing instead to vilify an entire medium based on this single anomalous title....

It’s not every day you see the servers for a multiplayer game get turned back on after a period of total silence. In the case ofHellgate: London, the situation is even more special than that — a completely new company (HanbitSoft) is the one responsible for the game’s return. Originally developed by Flagship Studios, the new and (hopefully vastly) improved game that’s been worked on by T3 Entertainment since 2008 has undergone a slight change in name....

Deep Silver and Daedalic recently released three new images — I’ve included seven others that we’ve missed — and tossed out some hot new story information for the hand-drawn adventure title. The game stars a melancholy clown named Sadwick and his little buddy, Spot. Daedalic describes the adventure they’ll take on as “epic.” Apparently, a king needs something rather important and he sends a messenger to, uh, deliever a message....

According toFortBendNow, viaSlashdot, a high school student at Clements High School in Fort Bend, Texas was arrested (and expelled) for creating aCounterstrikemap that replicated the grounds of his school. The student in question apparently created the map as a free download used primarily by himself and his friends, but since administrators simply lack the ability to differentiate fiction from non-fiction, as soon as they stopped looking for the Quad Damage, they removed him from class....

During itsRagepresentation today at QuakeCon, id Software’s creative director Tim Willits confirmed the release date for its hotly-anticipated first-person shooter. “When it’s done,” he said. Okay, just kidding. He didn’t say that. It’s out August 01, 2025 in the United States and May 15, 2025 in Europe. We have a few new screenshots ofRage, along with the rest of the QuakeCon game line-up,here.

The iPhone isn’t just for looking at porn in the bathroom at work. It’s also for playing mediocre games that you’d be playing on an actual games console. I’m joking of course, because my iPod Touch is full of cool games and that’s why we’re always trying to push more App coverage out there for you. TheCyberathlete Professional Leagueis hosting a new gaming tournament that will hopefully show that video games aren’t all first-person shooters, and that a real gamer should be skillful atallgenres. TheIron-Man of Gaming tournamentattempts to judge players on their skills over several genres of games from yesterday and today. This event, presented byScrewAttack.comandVideo Gamers League(a console-only group that holds tournaments at CPL events), will take place on August 30th through September 2nd, during the Summer 2007 CPL Championships in Dallas, Texas....

I’m surprised people have been asking, but for those of you who don’t know, our sister site Japanator.com has been down since the night before last. For once, it’s not the site crashing. We’re not giving up on it, either. What’s happened is Niero and the team over in Miami is finally moving the site over to Elephant. A project some 800 years in the making (before community blogs, even!), we’ve been taking the weekend to try and make the site somewhat more functional, so that it doesn’t roll over and die every time we get hit by a digg....

Up until this mini announcement, I had completely forgotten Club Nintendo even existed. I then went on to remember how I had never registered any of my Nintendo products before, and proceeded to wrack up enough Coins to get the neat poster set that’s now supposedly en route to my house. Here’s the tricky part — do I put the “Mario’s History” poster somewhere in my office, or like most cool things, should it go up in my bathroom?...

Someone said, “Freeze!” right at the beginning and I think that’s pretty much all there actually is. So, I’ve been taking it on myself to perform the roles of Aya Brea, Kyle Madigan and everyone else in the game....

If you read ourDestructoid review ofLock’s Quest, then you’ll know that I am a definite fan of 5th Cell’s excellentTower Defensestyle strategy game. It is with great interest then, that I hear 5th Cell will be hopping into bed with IGN to announce a brand new videogame. With games likeDrawn to LifeandLock’s Quest, 5th Cell makes some pretty interesting titles, and the underrated developer is promising that this new one will commit to the studio’s goals of bringing new and innovative things to gamers....
