A Quarter Draws Near! The RPG piggy bank

This story provided the major laughs I was desperately in need of today, and I have to admit I’m most grateful. Bankquest is a piggy bank from Tomy that actually has a little RPG game built into the front. Each time you insert a coin, it translates it into “gold” so you can buy weapons, armor and items for your little adventurer. Not only is this hilarious, but it beats the hell out of the bowl I keep on my kitchen counter for change, not to mention I think my friends would get a tremendous kick out of it....

Aaamaazing!: Ico, Yorda, and the Bridge

[Monthly Musing promotions are starting to wrap up! As one of our last promotions, ThaJinx tells us how the relationship between Ico and Yorda created a stunning gaming experience. Promotions are all lined up for tomorrow and the weekend, but be on the lookout for the next Monthly Musing topic on Monday! — JRo] It constantly surprises me how many people haven’t playedICO. If its creator — Fumito Ueda — is to be believed, the lack of a gargantuan playerbase is the result of the game not having a certain degree of accessibility, thus making it “not good enough....

Army of Two: the 40th Day: Salem and Rios to the rescue

Army of Two: The 40th Day’s world isn’t pretty. The latest trailer for the 2010 title starts with a sense of urgency — camera wobble and filters and then a shot of a plane tumbling to the ground. Explosions. A man named Jonah — probably a terrorist — speaks over the carnage. He says it begins with “one cataclysmic event.” His mission is to “rebuild humanity from the ashes of oppression....

Bitches whine about Heavy Rain ad, ASA rejects complaints

A BritishHeavy Raincommercial that details the “store robbery” scene and the various ways in which players can experience it (even though the scene always ends the same way) has been the subject of complaints by clucking busybodies with nothing better to do. Surprisingly, however, Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority has shown some balls andnotaccepted the complaints. The 38 wankers who whined about it claim that the commercial was aired at a time when young children could have watched it (because lazy British parents rely on the so-called “9pm watershed” to tell them when to send kids to bed even though most of them let the little bastards stay up late anyway) and that it “glamorized” violence, because apparently portraying an armed robbery as a bad thing is glamorous....

Blacklight: Tango Down gets second update for PC, XBLA

Publisher Ignition Entertainment just shot us a note to give us a heads up on theBlacklight: Tango Downpatch for Xbox Live Arcade and PC that should be available today. It’s the second update that’s been made available since the game’s launch earlier this year, and is said to fix a number of issues based on community feedback. This includes spawn issues, round times, matchmaking, and more. The “trial timer” on the game’s demo has also been reset, so if you had checked out the game before and took issue with bugs or gameplay problems, you can check it out again to see if developer Zombie Studios can change your mind....

Blizzard: Diablo III may or may not hit 2011

Activision was playing coy when talking about a new Blizzard game for 2011 in today’s financial conference. First, they made a footnote for their 2011 projections that current projections do not include a new Blizzard game for 2011. Then they briefly mentioned that if there wouldn’t be such a game this year, it would result in two Blizzard titles for 2012. Elaborating on an investor’s question about this and about the status ofDiablo III, Blizzard commented that development onDiablo IIIis “going well....

Bulletstorm will look ‘amazing’ on PS3

Epic is known for working almost exclusively with the Xbox 360, so the legions of hardcore Sony lovers out there may be worried for the PS3 version ofBulletstorm. Don’t worry though, because strong-thighed developer Clifford Bleszinski has promised the PS3 version will impress. “When you see the game on PS3, you’ll see the textures look crisp, the depth of field looks great, the particles look amazing,” he says, “it will very much take advantage of what the PS3 is capable of....

Burn Zombie Burn coming to PC this year

One of my favorite downloadable games from 2009 is on its way to the PC. DoubleSix, the makers of Burn Zombie Burn, told Big Download that the dual-stick zombie shooter will be appearing on Steam later this year. I think this is great news. I really like this game, more than thereviewI wrote would seem to suggest. It’s continued to grow on me and I love to just vegetate sometimes and mindlessly run roughshod over the bloated and decaying corpses....

Claptrap channels Bale in first Borderlands short

In my recentpreview ofBorderlands, I made a few passing references to Claptrap, “a talking-robot that looks like a filthy, low-rent version ofStar Wars’ R2D2 that glides on one wheel.” What I failed to mention was how awesome Claptrap is. Like, I think about him all of the time awesome. Despite not being a central character in the game in the game’s story (so far that I’ve noticed), the robotic guide has enough charm and wit that I have little doubt he’ll become a gamer favorite whenBorderlandsis released this October....

Cliff Bleszinski calls Call of Duty-like development cycles ‘soulless’

Cliff Bleszinski has no intention of farming outGears of War. In an interview with Develop magazine at a recent press event, the designer spoke against the multi-developer approach to producing a series of games. “…sometimes I feel a franchise loses something when it’s shifted off to another shop. You get the primary studio that really understands about the franchise, and sometimes the other studio that takes it over can do well, but there’s something lost in translation, like the game’s soul has gone....

Count it! Gus Johnson is Madden NFL 11 play-by-play man

He did a voice-over for the game’sdebut trailer, but now it’s official: as you can see in the “See It. Hear It. Feel It.”Madden NFL 11Developers Series video above, exuberant commentator Gus Johnson is replacing the staid Tom Hammond as the play-by-play announcer forMaddenthis year. Johnson’s explosive work covering thenow-famous Brandon Stokley touchdown catchat the end of the Week 1 Bengals-Broncos game last season apparently inspired EA Tiburon to sign him forMadden 11, and I couldn’t be more excited....
