FMV adventure! Hysteria Project, for PS3 and PSP

Ah, remember the days of FMV game play? Well, I guess “game play” doesn’t exactly fit. It was closer to watching. Watching and thinking. LikeMyst. One of my favorites ever was a PC game calledDrowned God. Did anyone out there also play that? Freaky sh*t. I love these FMV games, so I’m glad that there’s another coming in the form of a PSP/PS3 Mini.Sanuk Games‘Hysteria Projectputs you in the middle of the FMV....

Fumito Ueda to show something off at TGS

We have all been desperately waiting for it; seeing more ofThe Last Guardianis pretty much something that everyone in gaming, around gaming and kind-of-near gaming wants to do. But we were disappointed by its no show at E3 and there was no confirmed hope on the horizon. Consider hope confirmed. Now Fumito Uedahas tweetedthat he will be showing something at the Tokyo Game Show this year. In response to a question over Twitter as to whether he was the real Ueda (please stand up) he said: “Yes, it’s me....

Game creation game Kodu coming to 360 this month

After Microsoft unveiledKoduat its CES press conference earlier this year, I was accidentally calling it everything from “Roku” to “Doku.” But even if I wasn’t certain of its name, after seeing a demo of the game, I was positive that it was damned cool. Microsoft’s answer (in some ways) to Sony’sLittleBigPlanet, Kodu makes a game out of game creation. By using a game controller to input commands, relatively complex code can be written and then distributed on the Xbox LIVE Community Games Channel....

Game Debate to the Death! Zelda: Twilight Princess VS Super Mario Galaxy

Yes, I know, my headline butcheredTwilight Princess‘s actual game name quite a bit, but there literally wasn’t enough room for its formal name to fit. Besides, neither of these two game series need any introduction, so let’s just move on tolast week‘s results: Interestingly, the vote counts for both the winner and loser were almost identical to last week’s results. It’s hard to call any game a loser, though, when the votes for both are so high....

GDC 10: Falling to your death: The Canabalt postmortem

Canabaltis one of my favorite iPhone games ever. It’s very simple, yet so fun and addictive. Lots of other people think so too. Both the iPhone and free online versions have become a hit, garnering recognition from all sorts of places. That’s why creator Adam Saltsman and iPhone porter Eric Johnson were a part of GDC 10’s iPhone Summit this year. There, before a crowd of convention-goers, they unveiled many secrets, and even made a really big announcement....

Groundhog Day: A love letter to my favorite Kongs

[OurMonthly Musing initiativeis mostly for community members, but hey, every now and again us editors like to jump in, too. This month’s theme is that of games we continuously go back to. For me, it’s my all-time favorite title,Donkey Kong Country 2.We’ll be promoting blogs on the topic to the front page throughout February, so head on over to the Community Blogs and start writing.] If I had to sum up my childhood with a single game — one that captured my imagination and consumed much of my free time for years — without hesitation, I’d chooseDonkey Kong Country 2....

Hands-on interview with bio-shmup MicroBot

I’d never heard ofMicroBotbefore last night, but from what I’m hearing, it could be pretty rad. It’s another game in this new genre of “bio-shmups”; shoot ’em ups that task you to kill amoebas and other single celled organisms on a microscopic scale. Ever sinceflOw, it seems like the industry in in love with this stuff. MicroBotdefinitely does a lot to set itself a part from the “bio-shmup” pack. Two-player co-op, an emphasis on cooperative strategies and ship customization all play a prominent part in the proceedings....

Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin: Overlooked Games of 2009

My New Year’s Resolution is to learn more about lighting. I’ll stick to it until roughly the end of this sentence. This week’s episodeis a sort of 2009-in-review thing, except not really. Perhaps you will enjoy it. If you don’t, it will ruin your day and thus taintthe entire year of 2010for you. So, you know. Be careful. As I write this the video has only been up for about twenty minutes, but that hasn’t stopped the flow of entertaining comments....

HMX: ‘Beatles: Rock Band is the Brian’s Song of videogames’

While at MTV yesterday to see a near-final build ofThe Beatles: Rock Band, I asked Harmonix PR guru John Drake to elaborate on something I’d heard from community manager Sean Baptiste during E3. According to Baptiste, the final movie for the game’s story mode is just as mind-blowing as theopening cinematicthat premiered at E3. He went as far as to say, “If you don’t cry when you see it, you don’t have a soul,” calling the entire experience ofThe Beatles: Rock Band“theBrian’s Songof videogames....

Holiday greetings from Majesco and Serious Sam

“Carol of the Bells” is my all-time favorite Christmas carol. I think it’s because it feels more aggressive than joyful and has a little bit of darkness in its tone. It’s like a mass murderer hiding amidst all of the other, cheerful holiday tunes. So, it only makes sense that Majesco would release this Serious Sam holiday greeting with a metal version of “Carol of the Bells”. Tons of destruction and mayhem also ensue, and the players are all skinned with Santa suits....
