The studio behindMinecraftandScrollsis set to publishCobalt, a game about cyborgs blowing each other to bits by independent developer Oxeye Game Studio. “Mojang will help us with marketing, publicity and distribution, while we continue to develop and add stuff toCobalt,” reads a post on thedeveloper’s blog. “This is more of a team effort than the usual developer/publisher combo, and the firstexperimental attemptfor Mojang to help another indie game developer to launch their game....

I’m sure we all knewCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2would sell well, but not like this. Activision has revealed that the title has grossed an estimated $550 million worldwide in just the first five days of its release. This makes it, Activision says, the biggest launch in entertainment history. It beat out the largest reported five-day worldwide box office record holder,Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince($394 million). And in the realm of videogames, it crushed the five-day worldwide sales records set byGrand Theft Auto IV($310)....

Originally thought to be out in the U.S. on Feb. 26,MotorStorm(that gritty driving game Sony is banking heavily on) has been pushed back to a vague“spring 2007”release date. While the delay will annoy those who have nothing to do but playResistanceand aGTdemo all day, you gotta put it in perspective: at least it’s getting more love and attention, right? EA Sports announced this morning (as reported byJoystiqthree days ago) that former Midway arcade sports wizard Mark Turmell has taken a position as the Senior Creative Director of EA Tiburon. Turmell made his name as the creator and lead programmer of several ’90s arcade classics, includingSmash TV,NBA Jam, andNFL Blitz, and so this move would appear to confirm ESPN’s rumor that EA Sports will soon be unveiling aWii-exclusive revival ofNBA Jam....

This year, Nintendo has quite a decent selection of titles I’m personally anticipating getting my hands on, especially in the handheld department. 3DS games which look great — imagine that! You could blame it on the flash photography. You could blame it on the players not knowing what they’re doing. Alternatively, you could blame it on Kinect being a load of crap that’s more concept than substance. Your humble writer isn’t stating that one or any of these things can be blamed.
