The inevitable happens: Ubisoft’s DRM hacked

We all knew it was going to happen. Ubisoft’s controversial DRM, which requires a constant Internet connection to keep games running, has finally been cracked. A group known as Skid Row has taken credit for the hack, which allows users to download a new executable file with the DRM portion removed. In the hack’s readme file, there is a little message for Ubisoft: “Thank you Ubisoft, this was quiete [sic] a challenge for us, but nothing stops the leading force from doing what we do....

The Last Story I found, but not Valkyria Chronicles 3

We recently told youthat Wii RPGThe Last Storydisappeared from store shelves in Japan at launch, forcing people to wait on a second shipment. I guess that shipment came because from what I saw the game was available everywhere here in Tokyo. Everyone said it was their number 1 top seller, but there were still units on shelves. I even saw the Wii bundle today. The top sales rank is potential good news for us....

The solution to the DRM crisis? Goo, of course!

Although Valve recently declared how it intends to make digital rights managementobsolete with Steamworks, I think many of us are hesitant to believe that one solution from a single company is enough to remedy the current DRM situation. It’s going to take the cooperation of many companies in this industry, which is why I’m happy to see Stardock stepping up to the plate. Stardock’s digital distribution platform, Impulse, is set to geta new anti-piracy systemon April 7 that looks to be one of the most consumer-friendly solutions proposed thus far: Game Object Obfuscation (GOO)....

Turning Point developer hates on Codemasters and loves on Atari

In an interview withOfficial Xbox Magazine, Spark Unlimited’s John Garcia-Shelton, said thatTurning Point: Fall of Libertywas simply a “run and ship experience” that was only pushed out of the doors to satisfy the “very focused financial goals” of a partner. Now, as the producer ofLegendary, Garcia-Shelton is happy with the time Atari is willing to give the title. Legendary, by contrast, has had the time to develop unique gameplay features and the fortunate chance to iterate on those features to really make them sing....

US Games industry salary averaged $73,600 in 2007

Games industry bloggers? Not so much (no offense, boss). The $73,600 American industry average is only up a few hundred dollars from the 2006 average, according to Game Developer magazine’s seventh annual survey. We know that (most of) the game makers work hard, so here’s hoping that more comes down the line for them in 2008. The breakdown reads a lot likelast year’s figures. Programmers rake in a good amount, with an average salary of $83,383 in 2007....

Want a Game Boy-sized NES portable? Here you go

I am all for people making homebrew consoles of their own, as it is far beyond anything that I could personally pull off. That being said, while this NES portable (based off a Super Joy III Nintendo clone) is cool in the fact that it exists, the sight of that screen size makes my face hurt. Then again, even my DS gives me a headache after a while, so blame it on Little Miss Sensitive-To-Small-Screens....

Wiimote strikes again!

CheapyD, my favorite video game-based Web site operator (Oh god, don’t tell Niero! He’ll beat me!), hasyet anotherhilarious story about the Wiimote going on a rampage and smashing high-end electronics to bits. This time, instead of afancy television, the victim was a laptop, in the prime of its life. It is survived by two kids, and a USB thumb drive. The incident went down almost exactly like the other one; stupid guy thinks he’s too cool for proper Wiimote strap usage, Wiimote disagrees, Wiimote smashes his stuff....
