SGC 09: Jack Thompson keeps his clothes on

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of watching Jack Thompson take questions from a surprisingly respectable and and open-minded crowd at the ScrewAttack Gaming Convention. I have to say that, after all my dealings with the silver-haired fox, I was impressed with JT’s performance. His self-deprecating humor and intelligent oration was a breath of fresh air, and I think everyone left the conference hall with a heightened respect for the man....

SHOCKED ANIME FACES! Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 shots

Here are some screenshots forDynasty Warriors Gundam 3, which features anime faces looking at each other, mouths agape. That’s what the game is about, I think. The title’s looking pretty hot. I haven’t bothered with these games since the first one, but I’m digging the new visuals for this one, and hopefully they ironed out the weird difficulty spikes and made the combat a bit more engrossing. Anybody picking this up?...

Should you even die once in a well-designed game?

How hard should a video game be? Should it tromp on your skull the whole way through until you break multiple controllers in aggravation? Or should it hold your hand throughout, offering a plethora of tutorials and stages easy enough for anyone to complete? Of course, the obvious answer is somewhere in between the two, but I think that it is even a little more complicated than that. Take dying, for example....

So much indie: ModDB’s latest creation, IndieDB

The team who brought us ModDB — one of the best online resources for finding videogames mods, in my opinion — isat it again with IndieDB. As you probably guessed, this new site takes the same great concept but limits its content to the ever-crazier world of independent games. IndieDB has actually been up for a little while now; we wanted to make sure the announcement wouldn’t get lost in last week’s E3 2010 absurdity, so we saved it for today....

Sony confirms those PS4 viral videos are fake

Al de Leon, Sony’s hardware PR representative, has confirmed to Game Informerthat those PlayStation 4viral videosare fake. Al simplytold GIthat he “can confirm that this video is not from SCE [Sony Computer Entertainment].” So yeah, that was a giant waste of time and energy! Neat! You know what this whole thing reminds me of? That Nintendo ON hoax that made the rounds just before E3 2006. You remember that sh*t? Nintendo had yet to reveal the Wii so everyone and their mother thought the ON was the real deal....

There’s a class action lawsuit that has been filed against Sony and Square Enix overFinal Fantasy XIII. There are some that say that the latest in the RPG series has caused “severe and widespread damage” to numerous PS3 consoles since release. Special Edition Super Meat Boy soundtrack out now

Similar to the multiple versions ofSuper Meat Boy, each with their own unique incentives, the game’s stellar soundtrack might be worth purchasing a second timenow that it’s availablein physical form. The 73-song, double-CD Special Edition soundtrack contains what was — and continues to be — available digitally, plus “two new remixes, menu screen music, cutscene score, and more!” And heck, you may even chip in a little extra to get it signed by composer Danny Baranowsky....

Super Mario Bros: Run finishes with only 600 points

One of the forum members from Sydlexia.com, Not Sure, was determined to beat a bad record. Someone before him beatSuper Mario Broswith only 700 points earned. Crazy! It took him a few days but he was able to complete the game with a 600 point finish, as you’ll see in the above video. No deaths. Just skill and patience. In just under eight minutes he was able to dodge all hammers, avoid power-ups and skip all the things you’re normally drawn to to help you to save the ugly, big-nosed princess....

Ten classic mistakes made by the modern RPG

If you love RPGs, as I do, you’ve likely played quite a few of them in your time. Even fans of the genre know that it suffers from a lot of cliche and repetition — finding one with a decent story, characters that you haven’t seen a hundred times before and a truly fun experience to offer can seem really daunting sometimes. For some reason, it didn’t seem that way ten years ago to me....
