A member of the retro-gamingsite Racket Boydid some research to find that fifteen years ago, a 76-year-old woman was clamoring for the release ofDragon Quest VIin the states. Edith Jeter’s wrote a letter to Nintendo Power stating-
“I’m now 76 years old. I may not live long enough to seeDragon Quest VIunless someone takes action soon.”
This was right when Enix was closing its doors, before the merger with Square Enix, so most of the company’s games were unable to be localized at the time. NowDragon Quest VIis finally coming to the United States on February 14th, but sadly, Edith Jeter is no longer here to play it. She passed away on earlier this month at the age of 91.
Edith’s story hits home for me, as I’m sure it will for many of you. Thank you Edith for defying gamer stereotypes, letting your love of gaming be known, and for working to get the game you wanted to play brought to the United States. You’re an inspiration to all of us here at Destructoid.
