Anybody who knows me knows that I’m a big fan of comedian and know-it-all Stephen Fry. Today, I have an even greater reason to love the frighteningly intelligent humorist (apart from the fact that he’ll be doing voice work inFable IIandLittleBigPlanet), as the gadget lover isa self-confessed gamerwith a big love for his pink Nintendo DS.
“My DS Lite is pink. There was so much demand earlier this year that they couldn’t be had for bribes, sexual favors or worse. Unless you accepted girly pink,” stated the British celebrity, famous for his work inBlackadder,A Bit of Fry & LaurieandQI. “The moment you open it, you are taken back to the old Game & Watch days but can see why the DS has succeeded so well with the middle class, the middle-aged and theHello Kitty/My Little Strawberry Shortcake Ponyset. You set up in a twinkle and then play on two screens, one of which accepts stylus input and touches.”
Fry’s gaming knowledge isn’t restricted to the DS, but in comparing it to the PSP, he clearly let it be known where his true affections lie: “The DS is nothing like as feature rich as the PlayStation Portable, but it isn’t trying to be … You can feel admiration and even awe for the big power boxes, but for the DS you feel affection – and that, in marketing terms, is worth a whole heap more.”
I never thought I’d get to write a story about one of my comic heroes on Destructoid. There’s another thing to tick off my to-do list. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go find out if Stephen’s up for a round ofCastle Crasherstomorrow.
