Nintendo appears to be undermining Sony’s recent 3D console efforts with thefreshly announced 3DS, a portable system that provides 3D gaming, allegedly, without the need for goofy glasses. It’s an interesting idea, but Sony is not convinced, claiming that the PS3 will provide top notch gaming in three dimensions, and that Nintendo’s “nine year-old” fans won’t get anything out of its 3DS.

“There’s a tremendous amount of opportunity on PlayStation 3 with 3D,” says Sony hype merchant John Koller. “The amount of interest in 3D from the retail side and game publishers is off the charts. We know we have a hit with 3D on PS3 and we’re going to concentrate our efforts there.”

“… Eight and nine year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now.”

Funnily enough, I consider 3D gaming to be the kind of puerile nonsense that eight and nine year-olds would actuallylove, so the 3DS sounds like a pretty solid idea to me. I know 3D picture books amazed me when I was a child, and slowly got less and less impressive as I grew older and smarter, so for Sony to pretend that 3D gaming is some intensely mature experience is the stretch here.
