Let it not be said that Sony isn’t ambitious. Despite the fact that the PlayStation 2 is still one of the most popular consoles of our time, SCEE’s Andrew House believes that the PlayStation 3will surpass it, aided in its quest by boosted functionality and online capabilities.

“If you look at the PS2, still in some markets going very strong, especially in North America in its tenth year on the market, we still can’t predict where that lifecycle will end,” he explains toEdgemagazine. “I have a theory that with successive generations, and with more value added and built into the console in terms of experience — and let’s not forget that the PS2 really didn’t offer a tremendously robust network experience — that what you effectively do is potentially lengthen that lifecycle more and more as you get to the next iteration.”

House believes that the PS3 will “significantly outpace” the PS2 before this generation is done.

The PS3 certainly hasn’t had as glorious a career as the PS2 so far, but as prices go down and functionality goes up, do you think the Black Box o’ Blu-ray has what it takes to take down its ancestor? All I know is, the PS2 still gets plenty of play here and nothing this generation so far has really topped what it offers.
