SCE still hasn’t named its motion wand, electing to, perhaps, avoid getting wedged in the same corner Microsoft has with Project Natal. But it appears as if the motion tech does indeed have a name — at least, a big publisher thinks it does.

At a recent conference in New York City, EA CEO John Riccitiello slipped “Gem,” in place of where someone typically says “PlayStation 3 Motion Controller.”

“In the coming year, both Sony and Microsoft have announced new controllers,” Riccitiello said at the UBS 37th Annual Global Media Conference (viaIGN). “Motion sensor controls, Natal and Gem, these are likely to bring new consumers into the marketplace.”

AsIGN notes, this subtle “slip” might be nothing at all. The man may have just misspoken or just referred to the purple ball on motion control stick. When the outlet asked for Sony comment on the matter, it received the line “No official name for the PlayStation motion controller has been announced.” So, no dice.

But we like Gem too much to quit believin’. It’s a name that speaks to the device and what it does, for sure.
