One of the best parts ofValkyria Chronicles 2was the music. Everyone knows that composer Hitoshi Sakimoto does not mess around with game music, and this was one of his best outings yet.
While the official soundtrack forValkyria Chronicles 2has its own liner notes, the folks at Original Sound Version had Sakimoto create new ones exclusively for them. Their write-up is a great read, anddefinitely worth checking out. It contains some really neat insights, like this one on VC2’s “Graduation” song:
I tried to express a more heartrending or longing kind of feel rather than just plain sadness. With the joy and sense of accomplishment of a graduation ceremony, I recalled my own graduation (although it was more than 20 years ago), and wrote this piece while thinking of it.
In these notes you see that Sakimoto was really focused on how different the overall tone of the game was compared to the first. For me, one of the best parts of Japanese game music is that so many of the composers pay this much attention to their scores.
