It’s simply not possible to convince some people that time has not been kind to Rare’s classic Nintendo 64 first-person shooterGoldenEye. So the idea of an Xbox LIVE Arcade remake of the title is still an appealing prospect for many. It’s too bad that legal issues are holding up the game’s release, both on XBLAandNintendo’s Virtual Console.

“I kind of wished that the difference got sorted out,” Rare’s Nick Burton toldVideoGamer.com, “but obviously there’s the licensing issue for Bond, if it it’s something that’s already come out.”

He goes on to explain that the legal aspects of dealing with the title are incredibly complex, with so many license holders involved. Activision currently owns the videogames rights for the James Bond license, and will be releasing their its first title,Quantum of Solace, this fall.

“The ball’s not in anybody at Rare’s court, really,” Burton says with seeming frustration. “It’s squarely in the license holders’ court. It’s a shame. It’s kind of locked in this no man’s land. There’s nothing on LIVE Arcade, there’s nothing on Wii.”
