In news that will probably be overshadowed by Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th anniversary,Bethesda has revealedthatQuakeis fifteen years old today, celebrating with comments from id Software’s John Carmack and Todd Hollenshead.

“I look back atQuakeas the golden age of game modding, before the standards rose so high that it required almost a full time commitment to do something relevant,” said Carmack. “I am very proud that many of today’s industry greats trace their start back to working withQuake.”

I still remember whenQuakefirst came out. I was too poor to own a computer capable of running it, so I would go to my friend James’ house because he was significantly richer and had a copy. We’d play that, and the PC version ofComix Zone. Great days, great days.

Quakeis a game I can still happily play today, and its influence on the first-person-shooter genre is undeniable. Quake, I salute thee, and I ask the Destructoid community to post fond memories of the game if they have anything to share.
