Recently, Sony developer relations manager George Bain announced that PlayStation 2 is going open development in Europe. Speaking to an audience at Casual Connect, Bain said that Sony were seeking direct relationships with developers to create lower budget titles in places like Russia and India.

As part of this new open development, developers will not have to submit their games through Sony’s certification process. It’s a step that all console manufacturers typically require of developers upon completion of a game. Approval is granted when a game reaches a level of playability without many errors.

Although this dramatic change towards development won’t impact the vast majority of consumers, it’s nice to see Sony open up one of its platforms. Hopefully, we’ll see a decent amount of original and innovative indie titles come across instead ofArmy Sniper 36orPac-Boy.
