A couple of weeks back, I got to check outThe Godfather IIagain, marking the fourth time I’ve seen this game. This time, I got to see the new multiplayer mode called Don Control.
Don Control is going to be part ofa free patchthat players get the dayThe Godfather IIcomes out onApril 7 in Americaand April 10 in Europe. This extra multiplayer mode was originally going to be part of a DLC package that players were going to have to buy but the EARS team made the new mode a free download, perhaps to make up for the delay.
Hit the jump to see what Don Control is all about.
In thesingle-player portion of the game, players will have access to a feature called Don’s View, allowing them to see everything that’s going on in the world. Check outthis dev diary for a simple overviewof the feature. Don Control is similar to Don’s View, but players will be looking at the actual battle in real time as opposed to the map overview from the single-player game.
As a Don, you’ll be able to fly around all across the map and see everything that’s happening in real time. It’s kind of likeHalo 3’sForge mode to give you a sense of how the Don moves around the map. You’ll be able to see what your enemies are doing and give your teammates a play-by-play of what’s going on in the map. The other team also has a Don and they can do everything you’ll be doing as a Don as well.
Don Control plays on top of the other modes fromthe multiplayer modes. While your soldiers are cracking safes, starting fires, blowing shit up and killing each other, the Don will be looking on and assisting his teammates. As the Don, you can set down waypoints all across the map to show your teammates key locations. For example, if you’re playing in a Fire Starter match, the Don can place down waypoints on all the locations where arsonists can set off a fire.
You can also place a waypoint on one opposing player so everyone can see them running around as a giant red light moves across the sky. Don’s can only mark one enemy at a time, and it’s kind of hard to hit a moving target. You’ll often leave a trail of waypoints that point to nothing as you’re trying to hit a moving target. You can delete a waypoint one at a time or you can delete all waypoints at once through the Inventory Wheel.
Don Control matches will also contain resources called Don Gadgets. Players need to take control of a Don Gadget as they would a safe. Once a Don Gadget has been taken over, players will call for the Don’s attention so they can be given a perk. Players that are near a Don Gadget will earn body armor, have their health restored and more. Once a perk has been given out, the Gadget will need to recharge before it can be used again. Don’s can also blow up the Gadget in the event an opposing player tries to take one over or gets too close to the gadget.
The main appeal of Don Control is the betting process. Each Don puts down a certain amount of money before each match. The Dons will also set how much of a cut his teammates will earn if they win the match. Keep in mind that the money you put down is being taken from the single-player game. Losing as a Don could potentially have major consequences in the single-player game and you might return to find your entire empire crumbling if you’re not careful. Don’s can also put up no money, which is a good idea for players who are new to the mode.
It’s extremely important to communicate in Don Control. It’s also important to play with people you know and can trust. As a Don, you’re putting up real money from the game and the last thing you want to do is play in a match with griefers on your team. It takes awhile to get used to playing as a Don as well. I felt really overwhelmed with having to keep an eye out on the map as well as learning all of the different ways to set down waypoints and learning all of the different ways I can use the camera.
It’s a fun mode if you’re the type of person that likes calling the shots. Otherwise, I think I’m just going to stick with sniping bitches left and right when the game comes out on April 7.
