VVVVVVX: The faux 3D VVVVVV remake

That has got to be one of the weirder headlines I’ve ever written. Roxfox on YouTube has come up with this little preview forVVVVVVXin Maya. In case you aren’t familiar with Terry Cavanagh’sVVVVVV, it’s a stellar platformer that deals with gravity flipping. This is what the game would be like if it were modernized.VVVVVVXisn’t really being made, at least not by the creator of this video, but it’s neat to think about....

Weekend Reading: Unrequited love in videogames

I’ve found myself cursing at the members of my party inFinal Fantasy TacticsandDisgaeafrom time to time. I’ll chastise the characters for not hitting their targets, or dealing less damage than I wanted them to. Alternatively, I’ll praise the characters when they manage to pull through in a time of great distress. Really, it’s not all that strange when you do it, but when you attempt to tell others about it, it just seems strange....

World premiere: Renegade Kid’s ATV Wild Ride

Renegade Kid’s next title isATV Wild Ride. Yes, it’s totally not what you were expecting based on its track record with theDementiumseries andMoon. The game is aiming to be the best ATV experience you can get on the DS with 24 tracks spanning the US, Thailand, England, Russia, Canada and Mexico, in addition to four-player multiplayer, 60 frames-per-second and the ability to perform dozens of “wild” tricks. While a racing game may have been the last thing you were ever expecting, it’s actually “been a dream” of both Jools Watsham and Gregg Hargrove, the Co-founders of Renegade Kid, to make a “fast-paced arcade racing game for the DS with the Renegade Engine....

Writer: It’s ‘dumb’ to talk about gaming’s ‘Citizen Kane’

Most of us already know that the “Citizen Kaneof gaming” is a stupid concept, for a variety of reasons. We’vemade intense fun of it ourselves in the past. Nevertheless, it always gladdens the see someone in the industry echo our sentiments, and in such a harsh way, too. “Self expression and the ability for players to feeling like they are making decisions are more important than the things that we, as writers, think are awesome,” says game writer Daniel Erickson....

Zelda: Skyward Sword art style makes sword combat better

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Swordhas a rather unique, and potential divisive, art style that carries with it a little whiff of watercolor. Producer Eiji Aonuma has explained why the art style was chosen, revealing that the decision was fueled by a need to exaggerate the swordfighting. “One of the reasons we’ve chosen the art style we have withSkyward Swordis that it is a better vehicle to showcase the exaggerated characteristics of some of the characters,” he reveals....

‘New’ NES game Battle Kid spotted in local Tokyo shops

Battle Kid: Fortress of Perilhas apparently been kicking around for a while, but I’d never seen it before. It wasn’t at PAX East or PAX Prime, and it sure as hell wasn’t at E3. However, it does look pretty awesome. If you can’t tell from the video, this is a new in-cartridge NES game being sold in some Tokyo shops. Note that this was an NES cart, and not a Famicom game....

20 million Call of Duty map packs have been sold

It’s official: 20 million downloadableCall of Dutymap packs have been sold and counting. Perhaps now you may see why everyone is expecting the franchise to inevitably go subscription-based with its multiplayer component. The potential there as another revenue source is practically unfathomable. I mean, what more in the way of proof do you need? Collectively, we are willing to pay for the games, the map packs — no matter if they cost $10, $15, or whatever — and you know something like a monthly fee wouldn’t be enough to stop the majority of players....

Coming up short? Lacking in confidence? [great big smile, thumbs up] Shrugging off any potential risk of their PR blast being scooped up by spam blockers, Atlus shows off this 3D Dot Game Heroes special movie called “Natural Sword Enhancement.” As you’ll see in the video, dude gets a huge confidence boost! He was fairly…large at first, but his enhanced member dwarfs anything I’ve ever seen. Says Atlus: “It’s not easy being the Hero of any kingdom,” commented an anonymous savior as he adjusted his bomb sack....
