British entertainment retailer HMV is going toenter the pre-owned marketby accepting trade-in deals for its products. The scheme, known as Re/Play launches this Friday across 160 stores. It will sell all current console games, including PlayStation 2 titles.
“HMV Re/Play further underlines HMV’s growing credentials as a games specialist, and enhances the credibility of our games offer through extended range and by providing a strong value proposition to our customers,” states HMV’s head of games Tim Ellis.
“This represents a great deal for our customers, as well as for our industry, as we believe it will help to drive footfall and stimulate increased sales of new games releases and hardware, as well as other entertainment products available from HMV.”
HMV hasalready suggestedthat it is focusing more on games than music in recent times, and it’s hardly surprising that the recession-resilient videogames industry is a tempting prospect for retailers. With HMV entering the second-hand games market, it will now be in a greater position to compete with videogame-specialist retailer GAME, something I fully support, because GAME is rubbish and competition is good.
