PC Adventure games likeDay of the Tentacle,Quest for Glory, andKing’s Questare old news. However, age has never stopped fans from celebrating the titles through re-makes, retreads or … live action plays.
That’s right. Recently, co-producer Chris Chappell pointed us towards his play entitled “Adventure Quest.” It’s a play that will combine the humor and splendor of 80’s PC gaming with living, breathing actors. The catch is that all the music is 8-bit and the actors will perform in front of a digital screen.
I asked Chappell to elaborate. He told me via e-mail that it’s “…set inside the world of an adventure game. We have live actors (wearing costumes restricted to the EGA color palette) moving between vintage-looking screenshots that are projected behind them.”
“In the play there’s a hero who speaks commands of the ‘Pick up the key’ and ‘Kill ogre’ variety. A disembodied voice responds to his commands, describes the scene around him, etc. “As the play goes on, the hero becomes self-aware, starts questioning the rules of the world …”
The idea, as Chapell told me, is to “tell a story that’s interesting in its own right.” Clearly from what he said earlier, I believe he’s on the right path.
