What is the official name? Beats me. We’ll likely have to wait until E3 to hear that. But a recent financial call with Satoru Iwata let us know that “3DS” is not the name of their upcoming 3D enabled portable game system. “We’ve said that it will be released during this term, so the announcement of the formal name will not be too far off,” the Nintendo president told investors.
So, again, at E3.
So “3DS” was a stand-in name? Although we poked fun at the name originally, it’s kind of clever in a way. It’s not drab and technical like Nintendo 64, but it’s not silly like “Wii.” And from Nintendo, dumb names do not surprise me. What else would they call it? It really could be anything. After “Wii” I feel like I can’t even get close to what they’ve named this.
