He’s an author and former military man who believes that children can train themselves to become snipers by playingHalo, and has criticized videogame violence for many years. He views games (as well as movies and TV) as such poisonous materialthat he believeskids need a ten-day “detox” period to clean the filth away. “[Grossman] described, in chilling detail, school massacres at Columbine High… the Red Lake Indian Reservation in Minnesota and Virginia Tech....

GameFan might be a magazine you’d like

Print is dead? So they say, but I’m not buying it. What I will be buying, however, is an issue ofGameFanif my local stores aren’t too ignorant to not stock it.GameFanis what used to bePlay, a magazine devoted far more to the hardcore gamer than your usual pen-and-paper rag. Of course, that meant it went under, because nobody likes quality. However, it has returned, and taken the name of another classic dead mag,GameFan....

GDC 11: Sony says NGP is not as powerful as a PS3

One of the earliest and most persistent rumors surrounding Sony’s “Next Generation Portable” is that its power would becomparable to a PlayStation 3. Sony is wisely downplaying such claims now, making sure to let us know that its abilities are greatly exaggerated. “Some people in the press have said ‘Wow, this thing could be as powerful as a PS3,'” explained SCEA research manager David Coombes. “Well, it’s not going to run at 2GHz because the battery would last five minutes and it would probably set fire to your pants....

Get your Trophies in my PixelJunk Monsters

Recently,CVGwas able to talk to Q-Games founder Dylan Cuthbert about the possibility of bringing Trophies toPixelJunk Monsters. Cuthbert wasn’t exactly forthright about the addition of Trophies to the downloadable game, as he remarked that Q-Games “[has] been totally inundated with requests for trophies inPixelJunk Monstersvia some kind of patch.” Of course, asking is not always receiving. So, Cuthbert tossed this out there to the fans: As this goes to press, I can say we are definitely looking into it – you just need to badger Deborah Mars and her team in Santa Monica to get some dates set....

Hands-on with Silent Skies, by Spyeart

Each year, Gamma entrants are asked to make games under certain constraints. This year, all Gamma4 entries must be controlled with a single button. I plan to write up my impressions of all six Gamma4 games. Michael Todd’sSilent Skiesis probably the most orthodox Gamma4 finalist, though that’s obviously not saying much. WhereB.U.T.T.O.N.plays like a real-lifeWarioWaremicrogame, andPoto and Cabengafeels like an attempt to make your head explode in as short a time period as possible,Silent Skiesis comparatively straightforward: you control a plane....

Hands-on: SOCOM: Confrontation beta

Shooting fake things in the face is a favorite pastime of mine. Years ago, theGhost Reconon the original Xbox really got me into the first-person genre, and the competitive nature of online play. I remember learning the maps, spawn points, and the timing on every one of the game’s numerous maps to a point where I could feasibly play the game blindfolded. I, of course, did not have the same lofty expectations upon receiving theSOCOM: Confrontationbeta....

We’ve always tried to make each episode of HAWP different from the last, in terms of both narrative and style of humor. That should hopefully explain this most recent episode. I’m not even going to bother putting up a Digg link.
