The guilty pleasures of gaming

Touch it The word hardcore when applied to gamers tends to paint a picture of a person who plays games likeHalo,Grand Theft Auto, and Gears of War, not someone who sits with his little Nintendo DS and plays hours ofCooking MamaorSuper Princess Peach. Believe it or not though, every hardcore gamer has his or her favorite game that they would rather not admit to others that they play, or even tend to feel funny while playing....

The Memory Card .10: To the moon, Mario!

Yoshi’s Island Since E3 has ended, I have to say, I am on aSuper Mario Galaxyhigh (and not looking forward to the imminent withdrawal). In a word, the game isamazing. Now that The Memory Card has finally returned from a two-week hiatus, I figured there was no other choice then to focus on all things Mario. Heck, I couldn’t even get the subject off my mind if I tried. It’s kind of like that oldTootsie Roll commercialwhere everything the kid sees is a piece of candy....

The Saboteur is feeling good, proves it in new trailer

Now this, my friends, is how you do a trailer. It’s stylish, it’s classy, and it features Nazis being thrown off buildings and covering other Nazis in their blood. What more could you need for a successful video? The only thing that could top it is dog sex, but I don’t Pandemic is allowed to do that, legally. This new trailer for Pandemic’sThe Saboteursets the tone quite nicely, and sets up main character Sean Devlin as a man with whom you don’t want to bugger around, whether you’re a member of the master race or not....

The start of the affair: Civilization

[Editor’s note: Community member SilverDragon1979 takes a look at the originalCivilizationas part of June’sMonthly Musing topic. — CTZ] There was a time when computer games came on 3½” floppy disks. When Sid Meier was not a gaming household name. When computers where used for little more then word processing and data storage management. On a more personal level for me, there was a time when I thought the only game worth playing on the PC wasOregon Trail....

The supernatural is what makes the new Wolfenstein different

Raven Software’sWolfensteinis the next entry in a storied franchise. Over the last seventeen years you’ve killed countless Nazi and occult creeps, stolen plenty of documents and stockpiled treasure, explored numerous bunkers and fortresses, and even battled a mechanical Hitler. You’ve done a lot. With this in mind, I asked id Software’s community manager Peter Sokol what Raven Software’sWolfensteinwould do differently. His answer was simple: the supernatural plays “more of a key role” in Raven’s upcoming title with the addition of The Veil — amechanic we played around with at GDC 2009....

Updated Power Glove is so bad

I always find it funny how Nintendo has come full circle with a number of their products. They introduced the Power Glove back in 1989 which had very primitive motion controls. Now we have the Wii and it’s currently the best selling console, thanks in part to the motion controls. Hard to believe it’s only been 20 years since the creation of the“baddest” controllerof them all. Matt Mechtley, who’s worked on games such asOff-Road Velociraptor SafariandMinotaur China Shop, wanted to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Power Glove by making one that could actually work....

What does Deadly Premonition mean to you?

While I was unable to attend GDC 2011 and meet the wonderful Swery 65, I was able to help him introduce his panel discussion,Game Design in the Coffee. A considerable honor of the highest degree, I think you’ll find. The above video features myself and a bunch of other game bloggers/reviewers/journalists/whatevers discussingDeadly Premonitionand putting into words what 2010’s weirded game meant on a personal level. It was pretty cool to be part of it....

Why don’t 3D Sonic games just use driving controls?

I’ve been having this random thought in my head lately and I felt the need to share it with you, the fine Destructoid readers. You see, I hate 90% of 3DSonic the Hedgehoggameplay as popularized inSonic Adventure, but I actually quite like the concept. My biggest problem is that Sonic Team has always tried to merge racing gameplay with traditional platform controls. You use the movement stick to make Sonic run forwards, backwards and turn around, and it leads to incredibly messy gameplay at high speeds....
