Friday Night Fights: Rocket Riot edition

I didn’t have the slightest idea whatRocket Riotwas prior to this afternoon. I imagine many of you are in the same boat, and probably haven’t even heard the name before. For starters, it’s an Xbox LIVE Arcade title similar to whatWormswould be like if it was real-time, and if jetpacks and rockets were the only mode of transportation and weapon type, respectfully. You all owe it to yourselves to try out the demo, because the game oozes style, hilariously cool music, and gameplay which you need to experience rather than hear about....

Game SERIES Debate to the Death! Grandia series

In thelast debatewe tackled the entireDragon Questseries and tasked everyone with choosing their single favorite game. Some older titles got more support than I expected, and some got less, but when the dust finally settled there was one clear winner at the top. Here are the results: This week is the same as last week, except now you’re all discussing whichGrandiagame was thebest out of the entire series. I knowGrandiahasn’t had as many players as most of the series in this tournament, but it still deserves a chance to compete....

Gameplay of Wesker and Spidey in Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Capcom announced last week at Tokyo Game Show thatResident Evilvillain Albert Wesker and everybody’s favorite web-slinger, Spider-Man, would both be appearing in the upcomingMarvel vs. Capcom 3. Now we have video evidence to support this claim. Above, you can see Wesker kicking all kinds of ass, with his moves seemingly based on his abilities inResident Evil 5. He flits around the battlefield like a chipmunk on methamphetamines, flings foes to the ground with brutal force and, of course, throws an air-to-air missile like a javelin in one of his special maneuvers....

Games that time forgot: Mafia

No time to waste: there’s Guitar Heroism to be done, so this article will be relatively short.Mafia: The City of Lost Heavenis a mixture ofGrand Theft Auto,Max Payne, and Goodfellas. This is a very, very good thing.GameplayWhile the world ofMafiais large and detailed like aGTAgame, most of the game focuses around specific, linear missions. You have to drive around the open world in order to access these missions, and the missions always require you to drive from point A to point B on the map before doing what needs to be done, butMafiais by no means a “sandbox” kind of game....

Go back in time in EA’s NBA Live 09 with NBA Live Rewind

Being able to change sports history in a videogame isn’t exactly a novel idea; features like Madden Moments have been around for a while now. But inNBA Live 09, EA Sports is taking that feature a step further, and that step — when combined with the game’sDynamic DNA— could turn out to be one giant leap for sports gamerkind. Check out the trailer above, in which Assistant Producer Gareth Reeder — who has an unmistakably Canadian accent — explains NBA Live Rewind and how Dynamic DNA ties in with it....

Go, go, go: Left 4 Dead 2 PC demo hits

TheLeft 4 Dead 2PC demo is now available via Steam after a short delay that almost caused the Internet to explode … or catch on fire. We’re not sure which one — mainly because we just made that crap up — but considering some of the raw emotion we’ve observed on various message boards since the recent Valve stunner, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Internet didn’t actually almost collapse....

Reports are coming in ofproblemswith the Xbox 360 version of Codemasters’Race Driver: GRiD. There is an issue with the game where it suffers from perpetual freezing and stuttering during races. I can confirm that the review copy Codemasters recently secured for me suffers from this as well. GRiD‘s dev team say they’re close to figuring out the problem and that a patch is on the way. Meanwhile, those suffering from freezing issues are advised to take out their hard drives and play using a gamertag that’s been saved to a memory card....

Hands-on: Destructoid, Joystiq join forces for Rock Band’s ‘World Tour’ mode

Let me say this right now:Rock Bandis an absolutely massive game experience. Deceptively simple on its surface (Harmonix’sGuitar Herogame mechanics mixed with some drums and a dash ofKaraoke Revolution), there are more layers of depth to Harmonix’s new “platform” than Gene Simmons has removed panties. Sure, all of the expected modes are present and accounted for — solo instrument single-player games, multiplayer head-to-head, and even online play. But, the game’s unique cooperative experience, the “World Tour,” is where the game really finds its identity as a social experience that makes it significantly different than any other game you might thinkRock Bandis like....

Hands-on: Gunnar gaming and 3D eyewear

We had the privilege of giving a couple of Gunnar’s eyewear offerings a test run in our office recently. Both theMLG Legend (Chrome) gaming glassesand thePhenom (Graphite) 3D glasseswere worn in the appropriate situations, tested to the best of our ability. Know that these “tests” involve web surfing, playing games and watching movies, so you’re going to get our impressions of some very non-critical experiences. In other words, these glasses are supposed to make the things that you do at your leisure look a bit better....

Harmonix steps away from the guitar to breathe

With so many guitar-based games under their belt (Rock Band, Guitar Hero), it would be safe to assume that the next Harmonix title would also feature guitars. It looks like it won’t. According to theGame Developers Conference 2008 session listing, senior designerChris Foster will talk about making the “other” project, a non-beatmatching game from Harmonix. In thewriteup for the sessiontitled“Your Music Is the Game: Designing the OTHER Project at Harmonix,”it is mentioned that beats would be algorithmically generated, and that this game would lack the dedicated peripherals of other Harmonix titles....
